How to Identify and Treat Colic

by | Blogs

What is colic?

Colic can affect up to one in five new babies and is often caused by a temporary lactose intolerance, whereby baby isn’t able to break down lactose – a complex sugar, found in breast milk and infant formula milk.

Identifying colic:

Colic is defined as episodes of excessive and inconsolable crying in a new-born baby, who otherwise appears to be perfectly healthy. The condition can affect up to one in five babies, so it is reasonably common.

Common symptoms include: 3+ hours of crying, drawing up of the knees, arched back, flushes cheeks and being generally inconsolable. In some cases, infant colic can be caused by temporary lactose intolerance too. This is when babies are unable to fully break down lactose, a complex sugar in breast milk and infant formula.

Constipation and gastro-oesophageal reflux (GORD) can be other causes of excessive crying, however if your baby has other symptoms, such as blood in the stools and vomiting, you should speak to your GP.

Treatment:

Colief Infant Drops have been trusted by mums and recommended by healthcare professionals for over twenty years, as a natural remedy to infant colic. Colief Infant Drops help break down lactose into simpler sugars, glucose and galactose, making it easier for your baby to digest their feeds and reducing their discomfort. Suitable from birth, the drops can be used every time you feed your baby, either in expressed breast milk or infant formula. At around three to four months a baby’s digestive system will naturally cope better with lactose and symptoms will usually disappear, but if they persist the drops can continue to be used for as long as needed.

If you suspect your baby has colic, keep a cry-diary and visit your GP or health care professional. Try a one-week trial of Colief Infant Drops to to see if this eases symptoms.

Colief Infant Drops are readily available at a number of retailers including Tesco, Boots, ASDA, Sainsbury’s, Holland&Barrett, Superdrugs, Lloyds Pharmacies and independent pharmacies, priced at £11.99 as well as online at www.colief.co.uk.
