Tips to keep your children protected from the sun

Whilst we’ve all been desperate for that sun to shine again this summer, and with the forecasted heatwave set to be a scorcher, it’s important to remember to keep you and your family protected from the heat. If you’re looking for ways to ensure you can enjoy the weather whilst staying safe, listed below are some top tips for keeping your child protected this summer:

  • Wear protective clothing – make sure your little one has the appropriate clothing on to keep them protected from the sun, for example hats and long dresses are a great way to keep them covered whilst staying cool.

  • Stay in the shade – UV rays are strongest and most harmful during midday, so try and avoid sitting out in the sun at this time and plan some indoor activities instead. However, if this is not possible, try and seek shade under a tree or umbrella to avoid those harmful rays whilst staying cooler.

  • And also bring out the shade(s) – children need sunglasses just as much as us adults do, if not more! The lenses in their eyes allow more UV radiation to pass through than those of adults. Since UV radiation that enters the eye causes cell damage, this puts children at a higher risk for many complications, so make sure to pack a pair of sunnies for any outdoor activities.

  • Apply plenty of sunscreen – it important to use a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every time your child goes outside. For the best protection, make sure to apply sunscreen generously at least 30 minutes before going outdoors – and don’t forget to protect those areas we forget about, such as ears, noses, lips, and the tops of feet!

  • Stay hydrated – when your child is out playing and having fun, they can often forget to drink plenty of fluids. Make sure they are having regular drinking intervals as this will help them stay cool and avoid dehydration.

  • Bring out the paddling pool – if you’re trying to find ways to keep your family entertained whilst staying cool, the paddling pool is the perfect solution! Just remember to keep a close eye on your children around water to ensure they are safe.
