With the hot weather creeping up on us, and the official start of summer just round the corner, it’s important to remember to keep you and your family protected and safe in the sun. Children and babies’ skin is particularly sensitive and important to monitor when out and about this summer (even with the inevitable moans and groans of applying sun cream!) Below we’ve listed our top tips for staying safe and cool this summer so you and your family can make the most out of the (hopefully) beautiful weather this season!
- Be cool in the shade – the hottest times in the UK summer is between 11am-3pm where the sun is at its strongest. During these times, try and keep out of the sun and sit in a cool shaded area. That could be seeking refuge under a tree or taking a parasol with you!
- Apply plenty of sunscreen – whilst the most obvious solution, it can often be forgotten especially when its cloudy and we have the misconception we are safe from sunburn. Make sure to put on sunscreen on your little ones and yourself at least 30 minutes before you head outside. Its recommended that children need to wear at least SPF 30 sunscreen in the summer.
- Wear protective clothing – sunscreen alone isn’t enough to protect your little one from burning this summer. Make sure they are wearing suitable clothing that helps protect them whilst allowing them to stay cool in the heat – for example a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses and a loose clothing.
- Stay cool in the pool – if your child is particularly hot even in the shade, then bringing out the paddling pool can be a great way to keep them cool whilst having fun! Ensure an adult is present at all times to avoid any accidents!
