October Half Term Fun

The October half term is upon us already, and whilst the weather might have taken a turn for the worst, there’s no need to ‘rain’ on the fun; especially with it tying in to the spookiest time of the year, Halloween!

Here at Colief HQ, we have some great ideas for family fun and adventures to make memories with your family this school holiday, whatever your budget.

Free fun

A walk in the park

October is a great time to embrace the great outdoors before the weather really changes and the big chill sets in for winter.

Why not arrange a day out with friends or other family members at the local park?

Just letting your little ones run around in a large free space will be exciting for them, but you could also take them to feed the ducks, spot wildlife in the park, or why not try a game of hop scotch or some organized games such as rounders.

Pack up a picnic and make a day of it.

Farm life

Take the children to a small petting farm and let them get up, close and personal with some of their favourite animals, take part in feeding them, and learn loads too.

There are plenty of farms that operate on a charity donation basis, so you can enjoy them for free or for a small contribution such as Mudchute in East London, The Garden House in Manchester and Bodafon Farm Park in Llandudno. Many put on free or inexpensive family events in the half term break – especially Halloween themed. Look out for pumpkin picking!

Life’s a beach

Beaches are not just for warm, sunny days. Take your mini adventurers on a treasure hunt on the nearest beach to you.

A pre-activity at home could be drawing the different ‘treasures’ they should look to find on their walk; shiny pebbles, a pretty sea-shell, a crab, some seaweed, a piece of driftwood – these all count.

If you can’t stomach the thought of dragging the family out in the cold, wet weather, there’s plenty of indoor fun you could do instead.

  • Arts & crafts – unleash your little one’s artistic side and allow them to make Halloween cards or paintings for the family, or try some of the great ideas Red Ted Art has such as Loo Roll Monsters.
  • Make musical mayhem! Don’t have any instruments, no problem. Use a wooden spoon and saucepan for a drum, and fill a jar or plastic container with some rice or pasta shapes to make a shaker and let your little ones conduct their own orchestra.
  • Introduce a daily story-time hour – a great way of bonding with your children whilst encouraging a love of reading and literature.
  • Make an indoor campsite – we all loved making tents at home with a bedsheet and various household props – the kids will love the chance to play freely
  • Roll up your sleeves and dig out the aprons to bake up some Halloween treats such as these BBC Good Food Halloween Biscuits or Good To Know’s Halloween Traybake

Something special

For a special day out treat there are plenty of theme parks around the UK aimed at different age groups to have some great family fun at and with roller coasters, water rides + more at most, the adults will enjoy it as much as the children. We’ve given a list of some of our favourite family theme parks below:
